How To Invest

In addition, Pat thinks then beginner investors should cultivate two important qualities: a healthy sense of skepticism and patience.

Investors should approach all investments with a healthy sense of skepticism. This can help keep you out of fraudulent stocks that masquerade as high-quality stocks. It will also keep you out of legally operated, but poorly managed, companies that promise more than they can possibly deliver.

If you are a new investor, you should also realize that losing patience can cause you to sell your best choices right before a big rise. All too often, investors buy a promising stock just as it enters a period of price stagnation. Even the best-performing stocks run into these unpredictable phases from time to time. They move mainly sideways in a wide range for months or years before their next big rise begins. (Stock brokers often refer to these stocks as “dead money.”)

If you lack patience, you run a big risk of selling your best choices in the midst of one of these phases, prior to the next big move upward. If you lose patience and sell, you are particularly likely to do so in the low end of the trading range, when stock prices have weakened and confidence in the stock has waned.

Here’s the text of the quarterly letter I recently sent to our Portfolio Management clients: “Many investors today feel uneasy about the future value of the U.S. dollar. The dollar is the key to the world monetary system. But its value is at the mercy of U.S. politicians, who can spend as many U.S. dollars as they wish. If they spend more than they collect in taxes, the U.S. can simply borrow or print the difference. It has been this way since President Nixon cut the link between gold and the dollar in the early 1970s. However, the vast U.S. budget deficits since 2008 have frayed investor nerves....
Priceline, $1,236.83, symbol PCLN on Nasdaq (Shares outstanding: 52.1 million; Market cap: $64.0 billion; www.priceline.com), is an online travel company that offers airline tickets, hotel rooms, car rentals, vacation packages and cruises. It also bought travel search engine Kayak for $1.8 billion last year. Kayak compiles airline and hotel prices from a number of travel websites and generates considerable traffic for Priceline’s other web sites. Major companies such as Sony and LG Electronics also license Technicolor’s more than 40,000 patents for use in their products including digital TVs, smartphones, tablets and digital cameras....
Many observers draw scary conclusions from Russia’s annexation of the Crimea. They fear it’s just the first in a series of land grabs. They think the ease of the takeover will embolden Russia, and lead it to rapidly stir up trouble among other nations with large Russian-speaking minorities. (This includes three NATO members—Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.) Some even worry that a future Russia/U.S. head-butting contest could cascade into a nuclear war. On the other hand, the stock market reacted to the news of the Crimean referendum vote with two days of substantial gains. I’d say this is a favourable response to the Crimea news, and a realistic one. Putin simply took advantage of a highly unusual situation. The Crimea was part of Russia for hundreds of years, until Nikita Khrushchev gave it back to Ukraine in 1954. If the past couple of decades are any guide, Crimeans will be better off as subjects of Russia than of Ukraine. Energy exports have given Russia some degree of prosperity. Putin’s reign has brought stability, if not justice or democracy. Ukraine’s economy and governance have been far less successful....
