GLOBAL X SILVER MINERS ETF $16.20 (New York symbol SIL; buy or sell through brokers) tracks the Solactive Global Silver Miners Index. This index includes between 20 and 40 international companies that mine, refine or explore for silver. Germany-based Structured Solutions AG developed this index. Global X Silver Miners ETF came out in April in response to a hot theme — in this case, strong investor interest in precious-metals stocks. But although it’s new, Global X Silver Miners ETF holds only well-established silver miners. Canadian-based companies make up 56.3% of the fund’s holdings, but it also includes companies based in Mexico (24.2%), Global X Silver Miners ETF’s MER is 0.65%. The fund’s top-ten holdings are Silver Wheaton at 15.0%; Fresnillo plc, 14.3%; Pan American Silver, 11.0%; Industrias Penoles, 11.0%; Coeur d’Alene Mines, 4.6%; Hochschild Mining plc, 4.5%; Silvercorp Minerals, 4.4%; Polymetal, 4.3%; Gammon Gold, 4.3%; and Hecla Mining, 4.2%. Global X Silver Miners ETF is a buy for aggressive investors who want to hold a silver fund.
