Ormat Technologies, $22.17, symbol ORA on New York (Shares outstanding: 45.4 million; Market cap: $1.0 billion; www.ormat.com), designs and makes geothermal and recovered-energy power plants. (Recovered-energy generation captures unused waste heat, such as exhaust from industry, and converts it into electricity.) Israel-based Ormat Industries set up Ormat Technologies in 1994. Ormat Technologies first sold shares to the public for $15 each, and began trading on New York in November 2004. The company owns and operates its own plants, which it uses to generate electricity for sale. It also sells plants to customers around the world. In addition, Ormat designs, makes and sells power units and other power-generating equipment for geothermal and recovered energy-based electricity generation. Geothermal energy taps into heat energy from the earth’s molten interior.
