Westport Innovations, $12.82, symbol WPT on Toronto (Shares outstanding: 38.3 million; Market cap: $490.7 million), develops technology that lets diesel engines operate on gaseous fuels, such as natural gas, hydrogen or propane. The company also has a 50/50 joint venture with Cummins Inc. called Cummins Westport Inc. The partnership sells a range of low-emission alternative-fuel engines for medium-duty commercial vehicles. In the three months ended September 30, 2009, Westport’s revenue fell 18.8%, to $31.7 million from $39 million. The company lost $9.2 million, or $0.28 a share. A year earlier, it lost $9.1 million, or $0.31 a share, on fewer shares outstanding. Westport has a high market capitalization of $490.7 million. That means the stock has a lot of future expectations built into its price. The company will have to sell a lot of its technology to bring in the ongoing revenue needed to justify such a high market cap. Meanwhile, its technology could lose out to a competitor.
