Theralase Technologies, $0.34, symbol TLT on Toronto (Shares outstanding: 78.9 million; Market cap: $27.2 million; www.theralase.com), designs, makes and markets hand-held “super-pulsed” cold-laser technology devices. These products, which can penetrate up to four inches into tissue, aim to eliminate pain, reduce inflammation and accelerate tissue healing. The company reports that it has sold over 800 systems in Canada and more than 400 in the U.S. and internationally. Buyers include doctors, chiropractors, physical therapists and athletic therapists. Theralase also believes that its devices have been so successful in healing nerve, muscle and joint conditions that its scientists are now investigating the use of its lasers to destroy cancer cells. The process uses specially designed molecules, called Photo Dynamic Compounds (PDCs), that are pulled into the nucleus of cancer cells. Light from the company’s lasers then activates the PDCs, destroying the cells. The treatment then allegedly prevents the cancer’s recurrence.
