FuelCell Energy, $1.30, symbol FCEL on Nasdaq (Shares outstanding: 192.1 million; Market cap: $247.8 million; www.fuelcellenergy.com), develops, makes and markets fuel cells for electric power generation. The company’s Direct FuelCells are currently generating electricity at over 50 locations worldwide, with more than 300 megawatts of capacity either installed or in the company’s backlog. In the three months ended April 30, 2013, FuelCell’s revenue jumped to $42.4 million from $24.2 million a year earlier. It lost $8.2 million, or $0.04 a share, compared to a loss of $9.1 million, or $0.06. The company’s backlog totalled $410.0 million on April 30, 2013, up from $181.4 million on April 30, 2012. Fuel cells produce electricity with minimal pollution and less fuel than conventional power sources. However, they are still considerably more expensive, with buyers relying on government subsidies to make them affordable. FuelCell has developed a leading method for producing clean energy.
