Canada Lithium, $0.47, symbol CLQ on Toronto (Shares outstanding: 336.2 million; Market cap: $158.0 million; www.canadalithium.com), has now received a mining license for its Quebec Lithium Project, near Val d’Or, Quebec. (Lithium is used in batteries for electric cars and hybrid vehicles.) The company now plans to build an open-pit mine and processing plant on the site, and start full production in 2013. This operation would be capable of producing about 20,000 tonnes of battery-grade lithium carbonate annually for 15 years. The property includes a former lithium carbonate mine from the 1950s and 1960s. Canada Lithium has an agreement with major Japanese metals-trading firm Mitsui and Co. Ltd. to market some of the mine’s lithium carbonate in China, Korea and Japan. The companies signed the deal after metallurgical tests produced battery-grade lithium from the Quebec project’s high-grade ore.
