BETAPRO EQUAL WEIGHT CANADIAN REIT 2X DAILY BULL ETF $13.24 (Toronto symbol HREU) aims to use a combination of derivatives and debt to offer daily returns that correspond to twice the daily gains of the Solactive Equal Weight Canada REIT Index. If HREU is successful in meeting its investment objective, its price should gain (or lose) approximately twice that of the REIT index.
The short-term performance of the ETF has been poor. REITs have struggled over the past two years or so—and the fund has lost a whopping 45% over that period.
The ETF listed on September 1, 2021, and charges a very high management expense ratio of 1.85%. The ETF has just $2.5 million of assets under management so far.
All in all, for periods longer than one day, complex factors tied to the futures contracts and swaps they hold mean they may not move directly in relation to the indexes they follow. That can bring you big losses even if you guess right…
