YUM CHINA HOLDINGS INC. $40 (www.yumchina.com) operates 7,747 fast-food outlets in China, mainly under the KFC and Pizza Hut banners. Excluding costs related to its November 2016 spinoff from Yum! Brands and other unusual items, the company earned $0.52 a share in the quarter ended August 31, 2017. That’s unchanged from a year earlier. Yum China opened 129 restaurants in the quarter. As a result, sales rose 8.2%, to $2.0 billion from $1.9 billion. Overall samestore sales improved 6%, as a 7% gain at KFC offset flat sales at Pizza Hut. Yum China now plans to pay quarterly dividends of $0.10 a share; the annual rate of $0.40 yields 1.0%. Buy. NEWMONT MINING CORP. $37 (www.newmont.com) recently expanded its Tanami gold mine in Australia. The expansion should add 80,000 ounces to the company’s annual output of 5.2 million ounces.
