Golden Star Resources, $3.72, symbol GSC on Toronto (Shares outstanding: 236.5 million; Market cap: $879.7 million), owns and operates the Bogoso/Prestea and Wassa mines in the west African country of Ghana. Golden Star expects to produce 400,000 ounces of gold in 2009, with equal contributions from each of the two mines. In the three months ended June 30, 2008, Golden Star’s revenue jumped 30.4%, to $91.9 million from $70.4 million. (All figures except share price and market cap in U.S. dollars.) Cash flow per share climbed to $0.13 from $0.02. Higher production and lower costs were the main reasons behind the gains. The company holds cash of $43.2 million, or $0.18 a share. Its $114.8 million of debt is a low 13.0% of its market cap. Right now, Golden Star is using its cash flow to increase reserves at its two mines; the company has raised its 2009 exploration budget to $9.8 million from $7.5 million.
