Axia NetMedia Corp., $1.59, symbol AXX on Toronto, (Shares outstanding: 64.0 million; Market cap: $101.8 million; www.axia.com) is a Calgary-based company that designs, installs and maintains high-speed communication networks. In June 2005, Axia NetMedia won a 10-year, renewable contract from the Alberta government to design, build and manage the Alberta SuperNet broadband network. The SuperNet provides Internet service to 429 Alberta communities, including rural areas. The SuperNet also provides Internet service to over 4,700 Alberta government, learning, health, library and municipal locations. As well, 20% of SuperNet’s Internet traffic now comes from non-government sources. The Alberta SuperNet uses Axia’s open-access-network model. That’s where SuperNet sells its network services to retail service providers who then deliver high-speed Internet access to rural areas. SuperNet now has more than 80 retail service providers selling rural services. In 2006, Axia joined with partner VINCI Networks, a subsidiary of VINCI Construction France, to form the French company Covage.
