Spanish Mountain Gold, $0.36, symbol SPA on Toronto (Shares outstanding: 100.6 million; Market cap: $36.2 million), is Vancouver-based junior-gold exploration company. Spanish Mountain is focused on exploring and developing its 100%-owned Spanish Mountain gold property in south central B.C. The company recently changed its name from Skygold Ventures. In July 2006, Spanish Mountain also bought 100% of the SHG property in central B.C. SHG consists of five separate properties totalling 923,000 acres. All of these areas have similar geological characteristics as the Spanish Mountain property. The Spanish Mountain property may have been the original source of about three million ounces of gold that was estimated to have been produced in the great Cariboo gold rush of the late 1800s. All of this gold was hand mined from placer deposits in river beds. Placer gold is gold that has been freed from its original deposits, then moved and concentrated by flowing water.
