Compass Minerals International, $53.99, symbol CMP on New York (Shares outstanding: 32.6 million; Market cap: $1.8 billion), produces and sells salt and specialty fertilizer in North America and the U.K. The company’s salt segment mines, processes and distributes salt. The specialty-fertilizer segment produces and markets potash crop nutrients and industrial-grade potash. In the three months ended June 30, 2009, Compass’s revenue was flat, at $159.5 million. Gains at the salt segment were offset by a 29% drop in sales at the fertilizer segment. However, lower costs sharply pushed up Compass’s earnings, to $14.1 million, or $0.42 a share, from $1.6 million, or $0.05 a share, a year earlier. The company paid back its highest-cost debt during the quarter. If you exclude expenses related to this, Compass earned $0.51 a share. Its $488.6-million long-term debt is a reasonable 27% of its market cap. Compass’s long-term prospects are sound.
