That was a bargain price for the northwestern Ontario project; the mining site contains an estimated 4.0 million ounces of gold. As well, Rainy River Resources held cash of over $90 million.
Construction of a mine at Rainy River is now well underway; the facility is about 45% complete, and production should start in mid-2017. New Gold aims to produce an average of 325,000 ounces of gold at the site annually. Not including Rainy River, the company will produce between 360,000 and 400,000 ounces of gold this year.
