This is the latest in a series of video interviews in which Pat McKeough will give his advice on a variety of topics. Some will deal with his overall investment philosophy, others on specific investment strategies, and still others will be comments on events that are affecting the markets and the economy. This time, Pat discusses the fact that in his role as investment counsellor, he learns a good deal from his portfolio management clients, Inner Circle members and readers. Successful investors spend a lot of time learning about investments, he adds, and you never know how much you might learn when you start commenting and replying to other investors’ comments.
Investment Counsellor: The Value of Your Comments Q: Pat, several of our readers have asked why you, as an investment authority, would open up your website to comments. One of them even said: my broker doesn’t do that. Pat McKeough: Early in my career I learned an awful lot from successful investors—just from the questions they asked. People who are successful as investors spend a lot of time reading about investments. They spend a lot of time reading about alternate theories of investments. Nobody absorbs 100% of anything they read, but if you’re really interested in the subject, you absorb a lot more than someone who’s casually interested. So I listen closely when my portfolio management clients and Inner Circle members ask questions, because there’s a lot of good stuff in there. I like to encourage people to comment, regardless of their opinion of their own investment knowledge. I like to see other people respond to that. And I certainly will do that from time to time, and I have. When you have a bunch of people talking, you talk about the wisdom of crowds. That’s a good thing—the wisdom of crowds is not infallible, like any other kind of wisdom—but it’s good to have it. And I think many of the people who are coming to the website and reading the posts are long-time subscribers of mine who mainly pick up things that I’m maybe not explaining quite as well as I have in the past, so for me it’s a good source of things to write about in our publications. But I think, too, that the people who are coming to the website can get more out of it if they read the comments and if they comment on other people’s comments. So I heartily recommend that you read the comments and if you have a question or comment, post it. Someone may come up with an answer you never thought of.
