Here’s the text of my most recent quarterly letter sent to our Portfolio Management clients in early May: “Today, lots of Canadian and international investors are worried about the U.S. political situation. Some worry that if a Democrat wins the U.S. Presidency this November, bad things will happen. Taxes will go way up, unions will put a chokehold on the U.S. workplace, regulators and Presidential edicts will become more powerful and disruptive, and all this will hobble the U.S. economy. Others worry that if a Republican wins, the U.S. will focus on re-criminalizing abortion and marijuana, and meanwhile will work to cut taxes for the rich, while making life harder for immigrants, gay couples and the poor, and possibly setting off a trade war. This reminds me of the “trash talk” that you’ll hear from the opponents in a wrestling match. It’s all about selling more tickets and attracting more viewers.
