Spread your funds across a sector

One of the keys to investing success is to spread your money out across most if not all of the five main economic sectors (Manufacturing, Resources, the Consumer sector, Finance and Utilities). However, you want more than to simply avoid steep losses. To improve your chances of making money, you need to take diversification a step further. In addition to spreading your money out, you need to diversify your holdings within each sector. This will give investors an additional measure of safety. For example, in the Finance sector, we continue to recommend that all investors aim to own two or more of Canada’s big five banks (such as CIBC, see this page). In addition, though, dividend investors should diversify their Finance-sector holdings to perhaps include insurers (including Intact Financial, see this page), fund managers such as IGM Financial, or a financial holding company like Power Corporation.
