Emerging markets rebound

Emerging markets staged a welcome recovery in June. That recovery was widespread, with the iShares MSCI Turkey ETF (Nasdaq symbol TUR) gaining 13.8%, the iShares MSCI Brazil ETF (EWZ) up 11.4% while the iShares MSCI Russia ETF (ERUS) added 9.1%. South Korean equities, as well as Chinese equities, also gained substantially. The overall emerging markets gauge, the iShares Core EM ETF (IEMG), jumped by 7.0% in the month. Precious metals and certain base metals also gained as the U.S. dollar lost ground. The physical gold SPDR Gold Shares ETF (GLD) gained 9.5% while the GLBX Copper Miners ETF (COPX) added 13.0%. Fixed-income markets continued their strong performance in June. The iShares Treasury Bond ETF (TLT), which holds long-dated U.S. government bonds, gained 4.0% in June. Canadian bonds, as measured by the iShares Canadian Govt Bond ETF (XGB), gained 1.2%, while the Vanguard International Bond ETF (BNDX) rose 1.9%.
