Cline Mining, $3.69, symbol CMK on Toronto (Shares outstanding: 132.7 million; Market cap: $489.6 million; www.clinemining.com), has received U.S. safety approval to begin mining its New Elk coal property in Colorado. The company expects the mine to produce up to three million tonnes of coal a year by the end of 2011. The New Elk mine’s reserves are estimated to be as high as 315 million tonnes of coal. Cline has low costs, and its New Elk coal property is in a favourable mining jurisdiction. The chance of a takeover by a larger coal company adds appeal. Cline Mining is okay for aggressive investors to hold. A: Western Copper, $3.56, symbol WRN on Toronto (Shares outstanding: 81.9 million; Market cap: $291.6 million; www.westerncoppercorp.com), owns the Casino project in the Yukon.
