Hi Pat: I’m interested in adding some technology to my portfolio and was thinking about Universal Display Corp. as a play on developing technologies. What’s your take on this company? Thanks.

Universal Display Corp., $37.62, symbol PANL on Nasdaq (Shares outstanding: 38.2 million; Market cap: $1.4 billion; www.universaldisplay.com), researches, develops, and sells organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technologies and materials. OLEDs are thin, lightweight devices that can be used in full-colour displays. Strong demand for smartphones has helped push up Universal Display’s share price from just $10 a year ago. The company’s OLED displays use less power than those of its competitors. That’s a big advantage for phone makers. The company has a market cap of $1.4 billion, but it reported sales of just $7.1 million in the three months ended September 30, 2010. It lost $7.2 million, or $0.19 a share, in the period. Universal Display operates in a competitive industry, and it will need to raise its sales many times over to justify that big market cap, let alone go higher. We don’t recommend Universal Display.
