KeyCorp, $6.63, symbol KEY on New York (Shares outstanding: 878.5 million; Market cap: $5.8 billion), is one of the largest bank-based financial-services companies in the U.S. KeyCorp has roughly $98 billion of assets. KeyCorp sells financial services to individuals and businesses. The company, which operates as KeyBank, has 993 retail-bank branches and 1,485 automated-teller machines in 14 U.S. states. Nationally, the company provides equipment leases and real-estate loans to businesses. Last May, the Federal Reserve evaluated the 19 largest U.S. banks, including KeyBank, to see how well they would cope if unemployment continued to rise and home prices kept falling. The aim of this “stress test” was to identify the banks that would have the most difficulty absorbing loan losses in the recession. KeyCorp failed the test, and had to raise an additional $1.8 billion in equity to strengthen its balance sheet.
