Costco Wholesale Corp., $63.44, symbol COST on Nasdaq (Shares outstanding: 432.3 million; Market cap: $27.4 billion), owns and operates warehouse-sized stores that sell a wide variety of well-known brands and private-label merchandise. Costco buys most of its inventory directly from manufacturers. This lets it sell these goods for less than traditional retailers. The company charges customers an annual membership fee, usually $50 a year, to shop in its stores. It also sells goods online. Food accounts for roughly half of its sales. Costco has 573 outlets. Of this total, 417 are in the U.S., 79 are in Canada, 22 are in the U.K., nine are in Japan, seven are in South Korea, six are in Taiwan and one is in Australia. Costco also operates 32 stores in Mexico through a 50/50 joint venture.
