Cannabis Science Inc., $0.11, symbol CBIS on the U.S. over-the-counter bulletin board (Shares outstanding: 761.3 million; Market cap: $92.1 million; www.cannabisscience.com), has shot up from $0.03 in late December 2013 to today’s price. The jump came after Colorado’s new recreational marijuana laws went into effect, making it the first state to legalize cannabis use. This boosted investor interest in any stock connected with marijuana. Cannabis Science says it aims to use cannabis to treat illnesses, with a focus on conditions caused by infections and age. The company says it will start by focusing on skin- and HIV-related cancers, such as Kaposi’s sarcoma. However, the company has generated virtually no revenue so far. In the latest quarter, it lost $1.2 million and spent nothing on research and development. On September 30, 2013, Cannabis Science had cash of just $462, although it did hold $204,000 of marketable securities.
