Westport Innovations, $28.00, symbol WPT on Toronto (Shares outstanding: 55.2 million; Market cap: $1.5 billion; www.westport.com), develops technology that lets engines operate on gaseous fuels, such as natural gas or hydrogen. The company also has a 50/50 joint venture with Cummins Inc. called Cummins Westport Inc. The partnership sells a range of low-emission alternative-fuel engines for medium-duty commercial vehicles. In the three months ended September 30, 2012, Westport’s revenue fell 6.0%, to $76.1 million from $81.0 million a year earlier. (All figures except share price and market cap in U.S. dollars.) The company lost $32.5 million, or $0.59 a share. A year earlier, it lost $13.2 million, or $0.27 a share. Westport’s shares are down from their all-time high of $49.68 in March 2012. That still leaves the company with market capitalization of $1.5 billion, which means the stock’s price reflects a high level of investor expectations.
