Westport Innovations, $28.73, symbol WPT on Toronto (Shares outstanding: 55.4 million; Market cap: $1.6 billion; www.westport.com), develops technology that lets engines operate on gaseous fuels, such as natural gas or hydrogen. The company also has a 50/50 joint venture with Cummins Inc. called Cummins Westport Inc. The partnership sells a range of low-emission alternative-fuel engines for medium-duty trucks. Westport’s shares dropped earlier this month after the company reported quarterly results that were below consensus estimates. In the three months ended June 30, 2013, Westport’s revenue fell 28.9%, to $34.9 million from $49.1 million a year earlier (all figures except share price in U.S. dollars). The consensus estimate was for revenue of $43.2 million. The company lost $33.9 million, or $0.61 a share, compared to a loss of $6.1 million, or $0.11.
