A long-time portfolio management client asked about a reference I made in a recent client letter, to the possibility that the U.S. is headed for political and/or financial upheaval. This client came to Canada from Central Europe after the Second World War. Any mention of “political upheaval” grabs his attention. To start, I pointed out to him that the U.S. Republican Party doesn’t seem to have a particularly winning package in its presidential candidate and party platform this year. In fact, if present trends continue, a lot of Republican voters may decide to vote for the Libertarian presidential nominee, Gary Johnson. The Libertarians won 1% of the presidential vote in the 2012 election. Recent polls say they could now get 10% or more of the popular vote.
