TELUS CORP., $48.47, Toronto symbol T, is Canada’s third-largest wireless carrier, after Rogers Communications and BCE (see below), with 8.8 million subscribers. In addition, its wireline business serves 1.3 million traditional phone customers in B.C., Alberta and eastern Quebec. That operation also has 1.7 million Internet users and 1.1 million TV subscribers. Starting with the January 2018 payment, Telus increased its quarterly dividend by 2.5%, to $0.505 a share from $0.4925. The new annual rate of $2.02 yields a high 4.2%. In the three months ended September 30, 2017, the company earned $367 million, or $0.62 a share. That’s up 5.5% from $348 million, or $0.59 a share, a year earlier. If you disregard costs related a restructuring plan, Telus earned $0.66 a share in the latest quarter. That missed the consensus estimate of $0.69. Revenue gained 4.0%, to $3.37 billion from $3.24 billion, missing the consensus forecast of $3.38 billion.
