NUTRIEN LTD., $95.39, Toronto symbol NTR, remains a buy for aggressive investors. The company is the world’s largest producer of agricultural fertilizers. It took its current form on January 1, 2018, when Agrium Inc. (old symbol AGU) merged with rival Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan (old symbol POT). Potash Corp. shareholders received 0.40 shares in Nutrien for each POT share they held; Agrium investors received 2.23 shares for each AGU share. Potash prices shot up in early 2022, largely due to sanctions on exports from Russia following its invasion of Ukraine. However, the high prices also prompted farmers to apply less fertilizer. That lower demand, and the end of the spring planting season, has pushed down potash prices along with Nutrien’s stock price, which hit a record high of $147.93 in April 2022. Despite the current weakness, the long-term outlook for potash remains strong. As a result, Nutrien still plans to increase its potash production to 18.5 million tonnes by 2025.
