According to Hulbert, The Successful Investor’s return averaged 12.4% a year over the 5 years to February 28, 2010. That’s 1,140% better than the 1.0% average yearly return of the Wilshire 5000, an index that aims to measure all publicly traded stocks in the U.S.

Hulbert based its figures on an average of the three portfolios The Successful Investor offers: The Conservative Growth Portfolio, the Portfolio for Income-Seeking Investors and the Portfolio for Aggressive Growth. All three portfolios are made up of well-established stocks from all of the five main economic sectors (Manufacturing & Industry; Resources; Consumer; Finance; and Utilities). Many of these companies also pay dividends.

It’s important to note that The Successful Investor posted these returns in one of the most tumultuous periods in stock-market history — a time that included the real-estate meltdown, the credit crisis, and, of course, the stock-market crash of 2008/2009.
